Sustainable practices like solar orientation, vegetation buffers, and low-impact development are integrated into site design.
Site design is the set of drawings a contractor builds from and a reviewing agency approves. Grading, stormwater, utilities, roads and erosion control all have to agree with one another and with the land they sit on. Low-impact approaches — keeping existing vegetation as buffers, working with natural drainage, orienting lots sensibly — tend to cost less to build than engineering around the site.
